- Urgency level : High
- South Sudan
- Food insecurity
In South Sudan, escalating violence, population displacement, epidemics and climate-related shocks are fuelling a humanitarian crisis of exceptional severity. Around 7.8 million people — more than half the population — are facing acute food insecurity. In Nasir and Ulang counties, the escalating conflict is destroying homes, disrupting livelihoods and hampering the delivery of aid, putting the most isolated communities at risk of famine.
personnes — plus de la moitié de la population du Soudan du Sud — sont confrontées à une insécurité alimentaire aiguë.
Children are bearing a considerable burden as a result of this crisis: nearly 2.2 million are suffering from acute malnutrition, of whom around 700,000 are at risk of its most severe forms. At the same time, more than 650,000 refugees and asylum-seekers hosted in the country are at risk of losing some of their food, nutritional and healthcare support due to the depletion of funding. For families who have already fled war and hunger, this reduction directly jeopardises their access to food, healthcare, safe drinking water and protection.
The emergency requires not only the maintenance of life-saving aid, but also the preservation of the conditions for sustainable recovery. Restoring essential services, protecting agricultural activities, supporting host communities and ensuring humanitarian access are essential to limit prolonged dependence on aid. Without a stronger response, malnutrition, displacement and the collapse of livelihoods will continue to undermine human development, social cohesion and the country’s resilience.
