In the Sahel, around 24.3 million people are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. Armed violence, forced displacement, the closure of essential services and restrictions on access are depriving entire communities of food, healthcare, education and protection.

The crisis extends beyond the borders of the Central Sahel. In West and Central Africa, nearly 55 million people were at risk of acute food insecurity during the 2026 lean season, whilst more than 13 million children could suffer from malnutrition. In Cameroon, flooding has exacerbated the spread of cholera in the Far North region. In Chad, more than two million people are forcibly displaced, against a backdrop of severe pressure on basic services.

Insufficient funding and security constraints threaten the continuity of vital programmes. Without a strengthened response, the loss of livelihoods, malnutrition and epidemics will continue to erode the resilience of communities and the region’s development prospects.
