Afghanistan is facing a sharp rise in child malnutrition. Around 3.7 million children are currently suffering from acute malnutrition, of whom nearly one million are severely malnourished, a condition that could be life-threatening.

Since the start of the year, more than half a million children have been admitted for moderate-to-high-risk or severe malnutrition. In some southern regions, health facilities are now admitting three or four severely malnourished children for every available bed. Admissions involving medical complications have risen by a third compared with the same period in 2025.

Behind this strain lie families lacking sufficient income, persistent food insecurity and essential services under increasing pressure. Without sustainable funding for nutrition, health, water and livelihoods, hospital treatment alone will not be enough to stem the crisis.
