In Mali, widespread insecurity, displacement, restrictions on movement and climate-related shocks are worsening living conditions in several regions. Around 5.9 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, more than half of whom are children. Fuel shortages, blocked roads, rising prices and power cuts are also disrupting the supply of and operation of essential services.
« Nearly 391,000 children under the age of five could be suffering from severe acute malnutrition »
Around 415,000 people are internally displaced and 1.4 million are in need of urgent nutritional assistance. Nearly 391,000 children under the age of five could be suffering from severe acute malnutrition. In hard-to-reach areas, the closure or limited operation of schools and health centres is exacerbating the health, educational and protection risks faced by families.
Humanitarian action must safeguard access to food, healthcare and protection whilst supporting local capacities. Restoring public services, securing livelihoods and strengthening food systems are essential to halting the deterioration. Without continuity between relief, recovery and local development, successive crises will continue to erode human capital and the stability of these regions.
