Chad is facing exceptional humanitarian pressure caused by the ongoing influx of people fleeing the war in Sudan. More than a million Sudanese refugees are now at risk of immediate cuts to food, healthcare, water and protection assistance. In the east of the country, reception centres and local communities are having to meet needs that far exceed their available resources.

The rapid growth in the displaced population is putting increasing pressure on water supplies, land, health centres, schools and markets. Refugee families, who have often arrived having lost their possessions and livelihoods, are heavily reliant on aid. Host communities in Chad, themselves facing poverty and food insecurity, are also at risk of seeing their living conditions deteriorate.

Maintaining vital assistance is essential, but the response must also strengthen the capacities of host communities in a sustainable manner. Improving water, health and education infrastructure, supporting local production and creating shared livelihoods can reduce tensions and foster better coexistence. Without joint investment in both refugees and Chadian communities, the Sudanese crisis will continue to undermine resilience and development in the east of the country.
