In Mindanao, more than 250,000 people remain displaced as a result of a succession of natural disasters, armed conflicts and protracted crises. The powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck on 8 June particularly affected the south of the island. Nearly 1.7 million people have been affected, whilst tens of thousands of families have been forced to leave their homes due to the destruction and aftershocks.

The crisis has compounded the displacement caused by monsoons, tropical cyclones and local violence. Damage to homes, schools, health facilities, water networks and transport links is slowing down the delivery of aid and the resumption of normal activities. Isolated communities continue to face significant needs for shelter, food, healthcare, safe drinking water and psychosocial support.

Reconstruction must take into account the multiple risks to which Mindanao remains exposed. The rehabilitation of infrastructure, the strengthening of early warning systems, the application of appropriate building standards and community preparedness are essential. This approach must enable the restoration of services and livelihoods whilst reducing the impact of future earthquakes, floods and extreme weather events.
